Constructing the actual bed

Basic tools required for constructing the open book bed.

You will need 3 or 4 tools to build these beds; riddle, spade and big stone to bash pallet into place. You will notice im using a 5" hole borer (auger). Its not a requirement I was just testing it out. It worked but the spade dug post holes were probably quicker... its alright I will use it next year for planting my potatoes.

First dig a the trench...

Dig the post holes... then bash the pallet into place using big rock, make like Fred Flintstone

Ta da ! one half of the pallet sunk...

Riddle the top 2 inchs of soil, just to take out some of the lumps...

Now fill the sunken pallet voids with washed (optional) stones collected from riddling...

Sowed seeds straight away in nicely loosened soil, this is a about 6 weeks after.

Building the pallet stack

Notice the "easy-to-assemble" vegetable cage using a few strips of pallet wood and gardman stakes (20mm diameter). No screws or nails are used. The cage is held together by wedging the stakes through the 20mm drilled holes at each corner. The angled cut on the horizontal pallet slats that make up the top of the cage give the netting somewhere to be stretched onto. The cage can be easily dismantled and quickly re-assembled on another pallet partitioned bed. Also notice the structure is slotted into the pallet at the back for stability.
